Why Salt?

Salt, sourced from the depths of thriving seas or the remnants of dried-up ones, holds a rich history as a symbol of value and utility. For centuries, it has served as a form of currency in empires worldwide. Salt offers not just monetary worth but other practical usages. From preserving meats to healing wounds and flavoring foods, salt is extremely valuable.

In Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, salt serves as a metaphor for a new way of living—a life guided by love rather than retribution. He uses salt to convey the transformative power of living according to the principles of mercy, purity, and peace. In Matthew 5:13 Jesus says:  “You are the salt of the earth...."

"You are the salt of the earth," this is emphasizing and affirming the disciples' crucial role in enriching and nourishing the lives around them. Salt serves as a reminder that each of us possesses the potential to bring positive change and goodness to those around us.

I pray that we can embrace our role as salt of the earth-ers and spread the love, kindness, and hope of Christ wherever we go. With every smile shared and every helping hand extended, we become like a pillar of salt, full of value and goodness, illuminating the path for others to follow.
